Princeton University Wesley L. Harris Scientific Society (WLHSS) is proud to host a symposium a symposium on “The Role of Science and Technology on African Development.”  The symposium  will provide a scholarly forum to highlight important developments and achievements as well as address challenges facing Africa’s development. One major goal of this symposium is to concentrate on practical solutions addressing the issues in these selected areas. The interactive discussions will propose programs and partnerships that can contribute to the sustainable development of Africa.

The major objectives of this symposium are to (1) discuss innovative ideas and technologies that can alleviate African problems, (2) promote and develop collaborative research between industry, academia, governments and development partners, and (3) establish operational partnerships within Africa and with Africa to encourage and sustain science-based projects. 

This symposium is designed to provide a forum for policy-makers, scientists, researchers and practitioners from different backgrounds to engage in discussions on current problems that Africa faces with special emphasis on the energy, environment and health sectors.  The program of events will feature a keynote speakers, interactive discussions, and a graduate student poster session.

Dr. Michael Adewumi, Vice Provost and Professor of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Penn State University

Dr. Nosa Egiebor, Chair of Excellence in Environmental Engineering, Tuskegee University

Dr. Paul Ginies, Director General, International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering Burkina Faso

Dr. Adel Mahmoud, Princeton University and Former President of Merck Vaccines

Dr. Amadaou Maiga, Deputy Director General, International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering Burkina Faso

 Dr. Daniel Rubenstein, Chair of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Department, Princeton University

Dr. Kunle Soyemi, Eastbourne General Hospital, UK 

Dr. Wole Soboyejo, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Princeton University

11:00 am -12:50 pm: Talks on Energy

13:00 pm-2:15 pm: Lunch and Poster Session (Bowen Hall)

2:30 pm-4:30 pm: Talks on Health

4:30 pm -5:30 pm: Summaries of Interactive Discussions and Closing Remarks

5:30 pm: Reception (Carl Fields Center)

The Wesley L. Harris Scientific Society is a newly formed graduate organization whose goal is to support and encourage underrepresented minorities in science, engineering, and mathematics. Its mission includes three important aspects: 1) to increase the number of underrepresented minority researchers in science and technology, 2) to create a supportive and interdisciplinary community for minority engineers and scientists, and 3) to promote an appreciation of the scientific and technical excellence within the minority communities.
